The Most Efficient Way to Store Your Knitwear for Summer

Finally, summer is here. We are aware that we could be speaking too soon here, but the sun is coming out for more days than it is not at the moment. That, in Britain is something to celebrate.

We think it is safe to switch over the wardrobe and pack away some of your heavier winter garments. If you are a fan of our jumpers you know that at Iggy and Burt we love our natural yarns, it’s more sustainable, soft to touch and most importantly biodegradable.

These investment pieces will last you years provided they are stored away correctly. The main aim with your new knits over the summer is to keep the moths away.

Moths love natural fibres and dark spaces which makes knitwear their favourite breeding ground and there is nothing worse than discovering holes in your beautiful knitwear when winter comes around.

Here are our top tips for storing away your Iggy and Burt jumpers.

  1. Clean the jumper – all of our styles are machine washable on a 30C heat or lower. We have found the Nancy Birtwistle method of natural laundry cleaning to be incredibly effective. We highly recommend her book Clean & Green: 101 Hints and Tips.
  1. Dry your Iggy and Burt jumpers flat. Hanging your jumpers will misshapen them over time.
  1. Remove the pilling from the jumpers. These are the small little yarn balls that sit on the top of your jumper. They can be easily be removed using a piling comb. Your knitwear will look like new once this very quick bit of maintenance is done.

  1. We advise storing all your Iggy and Burt knits in breathable bags to allow the wool to breathe. Plastic bags or airtight containers can trap moisture and lead to mildew or odours.
  1. Cedar balls are your friend and are long lasting and every few months all you need to do is sand them to release more of the fragrance that repels moths.
